Department of History

The Department of History was established in 1919 with the establishment of D.A.V. College, Kanpur. The Department of History has been continuously making its excellent contribution in the field of higher education since 1919 and carrying forward the historical legacy of a century.

The first Head of the department was Prof. R. Dutta, who took over the responsibility as Head of this department in 1919. Various scholars and academicians have adorned the post of Head of the Department from 1919 till date. The details of the heads of the Department of History from the year 1919 are as follows:-

Since its inception, the students of the Department of History have made their invaluable contribution to the different walks of society. Under the able guidance of these learned professors and scholars of the department, about twenty students received research degrees. A number of our students succeeded in the UGC-NET/JRF examination. Many have been selected in various universities, colleges and higher education institutions and making valuable contributions in the field of education. Many students have chosen the administrative positions and have been selected in the examinations conducted by the Union Public Service Commission, Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission and other public services examinations conducted by various state agencies as well. The department has also made its academic contribution in the field of research and publication. As far as fifty research papers have been published in various national and international journals by the teachers of the department.

There is a provision for MA final year students to undertake research Dissertation Writing/Research Projects, to nurture the attitude, aptitude and training for historical research. There are around forty short research dissertations have been done.

It is also noteworthy that in the years 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1976, 1979, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2021, our students not only secured the first position continuously but also got the highest position in the merit list of the university and received the gold medal of the university from the Governor of Uttar Pradesh.

Five minor research projects have been completed and submitted by the teachers of the department. University Grant Commission funded Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Study Centre was established in 2009 in the department. The members of the department remain engaged in various educational and co-curricular activities. In the Lucknow session of UP History Congress 2018, Dr.Prashant Mishra got the opportunity to adorn the position of Chairperson of the Modern History Section. Research seminars and lecture series are organized by the department from time to time for the benifit of students, research scholars and academicians.

Prof. Adesh Gupta is presently the Incharge of the department of History. He is a historian of high repute, having published more than two dozen papers in internationally peer reviewed journals. Presently, he is guiding two Ph.D. scholars.

Dr. Raj Kumar Rajoriya, assistant professor in the department has published papers in reputed journals.
