The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), established in September 2015 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, provides a methodology for ranking institutions across the country.
In 2016, NIRF ranked institutions in four broad categories: Universities, Engineering, Management, and Pharmacy. The following year, NIRF 2017 included six categories by adding Colleges as an independent category and introducing an Overall ranking amongst all five categories. By 2018, NIRF had expanded to include more institutions with three additional categories: medicine, architecture, and law.
The ranking methodology is based on the overall recommendations and broad understanding developed by a Core Committee set up by MHRD to identify comprehensive parameters for ranking various universities and institutions. These parameters broadly encompass:
